AppleInsider is reporting that Apple plans to introduce an HDMI connector on an update to the Mac Mini line of desktop Macs. The HDMI connector would be in addition to the Mini DisplayPort video connector on current Mac Minis.
AppleInsider bases its claim on prototypes seen by an AppleInsider source. According to the prototype image, the HDMI port is located next to the Mini DisplayPort. If true, this would allow the Mac Mini to drive an HDTV or other large screen display directly, without a Mini DisplayPort adapter. Even better, the HDMI port could include audio as well as video. With a single cable connection, the Mini could be a key component in a home theater entertainment system.
If Apple were going to move to support both HDMI and Mini DisplayPorts, then we would expect to see this capability across the product line, not just in the Mac Mini. But we certainly wouldn't mind seeing an HDMI connector on Macs, even if the Mini is the first one to get one, so here's hoping AppleInsider has the goods on this rumor.
