Although many of us enjoy high tech devices, there are times when we still enjoy going back to traditional methods. We may type on the keyboard all day, but still find comfort in writing or drawing with a pencil and paper, which can offer better control than a keyboard and mouse. The Wacom Bamboo Fun pen and touch brings the best of both worlds together. It marries the new and the old by attaching a pen-and-tablet interface to your computer. Yet while this tablet mimics pencil and paper, it is really very high tech.
Not only does it allow for precise control using the pen, it recognises multi-touch gestures like pinch to zoom in and out, a rotation gesture allows you to turn your pictures in iPhoto and Aperture and swiping to go back and forwards in safari, there's nine in total to master. Unfortunately it only supports up to two finger input, so not all of Apples new multi-touch MacBook gestures are supported, but if you use a desktop or a older portable its a welcome addition.
The tablet comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 if you're on a Mac (or 7 if you're on a PC), ArtRage and many more of what Wacom call 'Minis', simple little applications ranging from games to music synthesisers. If you buy the medium sized tablet you'll also get Corel Painter Essentials 4.
The Bamboo uses a proximity sensor in the pen to switch between Pen mode and Touch mode. The sensor does an admirable job of kicking into Pen mode whenever the stylus tip or eraser is within a quarter-inch of the tablet’s surface allowing you to track and tap with ease. Along the edge are four programmable buttons and the pen itself has two which can be configured for left and right click.
The build quality of the Bamboo is excellent, its slim, light, there's no flex and its the perfect size to rest across the keyboard of my MacBook so I can draw while relaxing on the sofa. This is my first foray into the world of tablet based input, and so far I can really see the appeal. It just seems so intuitive, when combined with Mac OS's simple layout it's a pleasure to use.
